[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Conference Concept Note” style=”simple”]We are living in an era wherein the whole world has become a small village. Long distance has become immaterial due to transportation and communication insurgency. English language, in this circumstance, has evolved as a global language and that’s the reason that it has not remained confined to England. The concept of Standard English is gradually being dissolved and English is flourishing in its vividness across the globe in the midst of plurality and multicultural environment.

Not only the whole world, if we look at certain countries like India, we can find a great verity of English being used in a dynamic way. It can be argued that the defining feature of Indian culture is its plurality, not only because India is a multi-cultural space, but also because the major cultural group in that space, i.e., the ‘Sanatan/ Hindu’ faith is by definition a multy-deity, multy-ritual, multi-belief way of life, leading to a unique kind of ‘multiple identity’ in the epistemological as well as ontological terms.

The socio-cultural dimensions of English Studies therefore, demands discussion of complex issues that are essentially multi-disciplinary in academic orientation as English Studies spans various disciplines such as psychology, psycholinguistics, sociology, sociolinguistics, culture studies, literary studies and pedagogy, among others, and also increasingly pluralistic in terms of its function, practice and impact.

One dimension may be to examine a fundamental issue: the concept of ‘self’ and ‘the other’ in a socio-cultural context where the individual may be endowed with multiple ‘selves’. In the countries like India, the multilingual mind occupies a multicultural space. What is it like for such a mind to encounter one more language? Then we may proceed to examine the long and complex historical process of the evolution of a ‘national’ psyche in countries like India that harbour several ‘selves’ and constantly interacts with the ‘other’ within its own ambit.

We may attempt to understand the phenomenon of what we call a ‘pluralization’ of English Studies as an academic discipline. We may focus on a) the function of English Studies, b) the practice of English Studies, and c) the impact of English Studies, in our context. We may also try to map the directions English Studies may take in the foreseeable future, by recommending the role/s of the Department of English in our educational institutions.
